Summer Food, Summer Moves!

Client: USDA Food & Nutrition Service

Increase awareness, in children and parents, of the importance of healthy food choices and adequate physical activity during the summer months.

During the summer months, many children have less access to nutritious meals and spend more of their time inside, increasing unhealthy summer weight gain.

Using guidelines presented by the USDA and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate, CarrotNewYork created a program to promote fun and evidence-based nutrition and physical education activities to children, their parents, and on site educators.

Summer Food, Summer Moves showcased interactive learning activities around engaging summertime themes to make eating healthy and staying active, fun and memorable. The complete program, developed in English and Spanish, included a 60-page Operator Guide complete with activities, recipes and food demonstration ideas for optimum program implementation.  Infographics, posters, flyers, and customizable social media content were also created to increase participation and engagement at summer meal sites.  And, parent brochures, placemats, and family activity guides sustained the momentum by carrying educational messages beyond the sites and into homes.

164 Million meals were served and 7 Million copies were printed and distributed to participating locations nationwide.

Record Social Sharing: A tweet using a portion of the infographic was the most tweeted in FNS Team Nutrition history.

Outstanding Results: Children enjoyed over 90% of the educational activities during the pilot test and were more confident in choosing healthy fruit snacks after attending the sites
